Historical Significance

V1 is the deployment Larva Labs abandoned after a flaw was found, and it was superseded by the V2 contract thirteen days later. Wrapping it more than four years afterwards turned an artefact that had been written off into something tradeable, and made a distinction that had been a footnote in the project's history into a separate collectible market. It is a case of a wrapper changing how an old contract is regarded rather than merely how it is transferred.

Context

Both CryptoPunks contracts were deployed in June 2017, nine months before ERC-721 was finalised. The V1 contract remained on chain and fully functional after it was set aside, since nothing on Ethereum can be withdrawn. The 2022 wrapper is part of a wider pattern from that period of collectors revisiting early contracts that had been dismissed and finding that their history was itself the point.

Description

V1 Cryptopunks (Wrapped) was deployed on 17 January 2022 and wraps the first CryptoPunks contract from 9 June 2017. Its verified source references that contract directly.

Like the later V2 deployment, the V1 contract predates ERC-721 and implements none of it, exposing transferPunk and punkIndexToAddress instead of ownerOf and safeTransferFrom. The wrapper provides wrap and unwrap functions that take custody of a V1 punk and mint a standard ERC-721 token against it.
