An ERC721 wrapper holding 23 of the 100 EtherRocks, the 2017 contract that sold nothing but a picture of a rock.

Historical Significance

EtherRock is the purest early statement of the idea that a collectible needs no utility at all. It sold 100 rocks in 2017 on the explicit basis that they do nothing, then became briefly notorious years later when that premise was tested at very high prices. The wrapper is what connected a deliberately useless 2017 contract to the marketplaces where that test happened.

Context

Deployed with solc 0.8.7 and verified on Sourcify as EtherRockERC721. Supply of the original is fixed at 100 rocks, ids 0 through 99. Note that the original EtherRock contract is not yet in the archive, so this wrapper_of link points at an address that needs its own entry first.

Description

EtherRock keeps its own rocks mapping and offers no standard interface, so a rock could not be listed on any ordinary marketplace. This wrapper takes custody and issues a matching ERC721 token. Its source hardcodes the original contract as OGaddress and refuses to mint unless the rock is already owned by the wrapper, which makes the backing structural rather than merely observed. It currently holds 23 rocks against 23 tokens issued.
