A gas token storage contract minted by GasToken2 (GST2). Holds a single SSTORE slot consumed when freed to recover gas.
Historical Significance
The gas token system (GST1, GST2) was a major DeFi primitive from 2018 to 2021, used by MEV bots and traders to arbitrage Ethereum gas prices. Over 1.28 million GasToken2 child contracts represent the scale of this practice.

Description
These contracts are the on-chain storage units minted by GasToken2 (GST2, deployed at 0x0000000000b3F879cb30FE243b4Dfee438691c04). The GST2 gas token standard worked by storing EVM state during low-gas periods using SSTORE opcodes, then reclaiming the gas refund by zeroing that storage via SELFDESTRUCT when gas prices were high. Over 1.28 million such child contracts were minted by the GST2 factory, making it the second-largest bytecode family in Ethereum history. The gas token mechanism became obsolete after EIP-3529 (London fork, 2021) removed SELFDESTRUCT gas refunds.
