mortal is the two line base every contract in the Frontier Guide tutorials inherited from, and the guide's text lives in the go-ethereum wiki: the constructor records the deployer and kill() lets that address selfdestruct the contract. These deployments are the base by itself, with no derived contract and nothing to destroy, which is what the tutorial produced if you compiled the file and deployed the wrong one of the two contracts in it. Source recovered by exact bytecode match: solc v0.1.7+commit.b4e666cc with the optimizer off reproduces all 277 bytes of the creation transaction.
