Historical Significance

The ethereum.org token tutorial is where most people who deployed a token in this period started, and this is its opening form: a balance mapping, a guarded subtraction and the metadata a wallet needs to show a name. It has no allowance, so nothing can spend on a holder's behalf and no exchange or escrow can be given a limit. That gap is exactly what ERC-20 was written to close, and copies like this one are the before picture.

Context

Homestead arrived in March 2016 and the ethereum.org tutorials were rewritten around the transfer and balanceOf names that ERC-20 was standardising. Deploying a token had become a matter of filling in four constructor arguments, and most of the deployments of this period are exactly that.

Description

A token from the ethereum.org tutorial. Balances sit in a public balanceOf mapping and transfer(to, value) moves them, throwing rather than returning false when the sender is short and checking the recipient's balance for overflow before adding to it. There is no owner and no way to create further units: the supply written at deployment is the whole supply. It was deployed as HYIPCoin, with the symbol ☺ and an opening supply of 1,000,000 units, indivisible.
