Meters an electricity grid participant in watt hours, feeding in or drawing out.

Historical Significance

The ethereum.org token tutorial is where most people who deployed a token in this period started, and this is its opening form: a balance mapping, a guarded subtraction and the metadata a wallet needs to show a name. It has no allowance, so nothing can spend on a holder's behalf and no exchange or escrow can be given a limit. That gap is exactly what ERC-20 was written to close, and copies like this one are the before picture.

Context

Deployed in June 2016 during the Homestead era.

Description

Balances are denominated in watt hours and tracked against a metering point operator contract that publishes readings; each new reading moves the member's running feed in or feed out total. A member is created for one direction, holds a managed balance assigned to itself at creation, and can be linked to peer members and an aggregation contract that nets them. Only the metering operator can switch which operator a member listens to.
