Historical Significance

A retrofit of a standard onto a contract that predates it. PixelMap was deployed years before EIP-721, so its tiles were invisible to every marketplace and wallet built around that standard. Rather than redeploy the project and abandon its provenance, the wrapper leaves the 2016 contract untouched as the record of ownership and adds a compliant token layer on top. That pattern, wrapping rather than reissuing, became the usual way to bring pre-standard NFTs such as CryptoPunks and Curio Cards into modern infrastructure while keeping their original deployment as the thing that matters.

Context

Deployed 2021-08-26 by 0x4688d77756a1d6f1ecf468c7b2ed1f66a0a45b28, four days after Adam McBride's 22 August 2021 rediscovery of PixelMap and the burst of attention that followed. Building the wrapper was one of the immediate responses to that rediscovery, alongside reviving the website. Wraps 0x015A06a433353f8db634dF4eDdF0C109882A15AB.

Description

The contract reports name Wrapped PixelMap and symbol WPXM, and its _pixelmap() getter returns 0x015A06a433353f8db634dF4eDdF0C109882A15AB, the 2016 contract it wraps. A tile owner deposits a tile into this contract and receives a standard ERC-721 token representing it, which can be listed and traded on any ordinary NFT marketplace, then unwrapped later to recover the tile on the original contract. The tile data itself never moves: images, URLs and history stay in the 2016 contract's storage, and the wrapper only supplies the token interface that did not exist when PixelMap was written.
